How To Restore Teak Platforms

Teak PlatformRestoring your teak platform is a relatively easy thing to do and can really add to the appearance of you boat. Although there are many formulas in use for cleaning and restoring teak I prefer to use a commercial product made by Starbright, which is readily available at most marine supply houses and related mail order firms. You can usually purchase the Cleaner and the Oil in one complete kit.

Materials Required:

  • Starbright Teak Cleaner

  • Starbright Teak Oil

  • Stiff Brush

  • Sanding Block

  • Sand Paper (120 Grit)

  • Cotton Rag

  • Gloves

Note: Always take appropriate safety precautions when working with chemicals including following the specific directions from the manufacturers.

Step 1 - Cleaning Teak Following directions on the bottle and using gloves, apply a coating of Teak cleaner onto the platform with a sponge or brush. Allow the product to sit on the wood for 10 minutes scrubbing with a brush any areas of particular discoloration.

Step 2 - Rinsing Platform
Using a garden hose rinse the platform thoroughly to remove any residues left by the cleaner. Depending on the starting condition of your teak you may need to apply a second application and additional scrubbing with a brush to completely remove discolorations. Allow platform to thoroughly dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3 - Sanding
Lightly sand the platform to smooth the grain from the cleaning process. Wipe the platform with a cloth or scrub off with a brush to remove sanding dust.

Step 4 - Applying Teak Oil
Following directions on the bottle and using gloves apply teak oil to the platform liberally allowing the oil to soak into the platform. As the wood soaks up the oil reapply as necessary to replenish. After 5 minutes wipe down the platform with a rag to remove the excess and allow drying. For additional protection you may want to apply a second coat after allowing the first coat to dry for extra protection from the elements.

Your platform should now look like a fine piece of furniture. If your platform turns out like mine did your friends may be asking you to restore the platform on their boats.
